Dr Henry’s Recommendation 2 sets out that to assist GMB in becoming a fully inclusive union and one which operates as a model of good practice around race equality, it has a duty to “promote equality of opportunity, good race relations and prevent unlawful discrimination”, whilst Recommendation 6 proposes “A positive action programme that includes; expanding and promoting opportunities for black and minority ethnic groups to participate at all levels of the GMB.”
In response, GMB’s National Race Organiser and HR & Development Advisor are building a programme for GMB staff from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds seeking to:
- Provide a framework to support, develop and mentor individuals and groups
- Promote belonging and remove the potential to isolation by creating a safe space to share experiences and support one another
- Develop peer support and mentoring opportunities
- Establish and facilitate a Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff network
The structure will follow a combination of one-to-one and group sessions. If you are a member of staff and are interested in participating in this scheme, you will have needed to have completed the equality monitoring form which you should have received from HR. If you haven’t completed the survey and wish to participate, please contact HR & Development Advisor, kerry.smith@gmb.org.uk.
Please look out for further updates.
