The announcement this week by care company HC One that they plan to permanently close Stoke’s Stadium Court care home has met with widespread condemnation from care unions, resident families and staff.

The care home on Greyhound Way currently employers around 80 local people and cares for upwards of 50 vulnerable and elderly residents.

Despite raising staff shortage as motivation for the closure, HC One have failed to follow industry standards in removing restrictive covid era limits on who can and cannot work at the home.

Sam Warburton, GMB Organiser, said:

“This move is shocking and dangerous; it’ll not only see vulnerable and elderly residents turfed from their beds but also put the jobs and livelihoods of local care workers at risk.

The home is wonderful facility, well used and loved by the local community. It’ll mean scores of vulnerable and elderly people moved without proper cause.

Closing this care home on spurious grounds of staff shortages leaves a sour taste in the mouth; we’re calling on HC one to reconsider the decision and for Stoke-On -Trent Council to intervene”.
