GMB Trade Union - If Keir can lead with common purpose, Labour can win

But power isn’t going to be handed to Keir Starmer on a plate

GMB Union has responded to Keir Starmer’s speech at Labour Party conference today.

Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary, said:

“We need a Labour government, but power isn’t going to be handed to Keir Starmer on a plate, he’s got to go and win it by reaching out to workers and communities who are suffering under Boris Johnson’s leadership, and his campaign must start now.

“He is right to talk about education funding, but any extra cash must be spent in the right way, including recruiting and giving a pay rise to education's forgotten army of school support staff.

“These are the people who feed your children, comfort them when they fall and put their lives at risk working through the pandemic  - often on poverty pay.

“Labour will never have a better opportunity because it’s clear this government is in panic, with no plan to tackle many crises facing the country, from jobs and pay to the cost of energy bills, and if Keir can lead the party forward with common purpose, then Labour can win.
