How does being a member of GMB make a difference to women’s lives?

Support when you need it

Our women members tell us that being in GMB makes a huge difference. On average, union members get higher pay than non-members. Members tend to get better sickness and pension benefits, more paid holiday and more control over things like shifts and working hours. This is because workers, through their union, join together to negotiate pay and conditions.

GMB women winning in the workplace!

Every year, GMB awards the Eleanor Marx Award to an outstanding GMB woman activist. Read about our inspiring women at the link below.

Intersectionality

GMB women are diverse – we’re disabled, LGBT+, of all ethnicities and all ages. Discrimination against us as women works together with other kinds of discrimination to make work even tougher for some of us. We know that:

  • Women disabled workers can struggle to access reasonable adjustments
  • LGBT+ women face additional barriers in coming out and facing harassment
  • Young and BAME women deal with extra stereotypes and prejudice
