Laws are great but only strong GMB membership in a workplace can make sure that the boss deals with risks and provides protective clothing and good working practices.

What are my rights?

There are hundreds of laws designed to keep workers safe at work and still the HSE recorded over 150 deaths at work last year.

This figure does not include those who die in road or other transport accidents while carrying out their work, or the thousands who die from industrial diseases such as cancer, or from exposure to asbestos. Many others are injured or suffer long term, debilitating, illnesses which can also have a great impact on their families. Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 states: “It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees."

GMB guides

In June 2018, we launched our redesigned range of health and safety guides at Congress.

All H&S guides available here.

The materials that are currently there are only the first wave of revised guides. In early 2019, revised guides on Waste and Recycling, the Care sector, Security, School Support Staff and working in kitchens will all be refreshed and republished.

We will also be publishing new guidance on Drug and Alcohol policies; air quality and work; adverse weather health and safety; diabetes and health & safety; working safely with osteoarthritis/osteopenia; and organising around health and safety.
