JOB DESCRIPTION

GMB London has a vacancy for the position of Policy & Operations Manager based in the London Region.

GMB is one of the UK and Ireland’s largest trade unions: we’re proud to represent members from across the professional spectrum and put the needs of our members at the forefront of everything we do. GMB's London Region is a large and diverse region; the region currently serves 88,000 members and 106 Branches, and covers a large geographical landscape that includes: Greater London, Essex, Norfolk, Milton Keynes, through to Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

London Region is one of GMB's most complex and high-profile operations: a region of significant political weight, industrial breadth and organisational ambition. Behind the Region's ability to deliver for its members, run effective campaigns, develop its activists and uphold the highest standards of democratic governance is an infrastructure of policy and operational rigour that makes everything else possible.

This post sits at the heart of that infrastructure. The person in this role will be a close and trusted partner to the Regional Secretary, a full member of the Regional Management Team, and a key figure in ensuring that London Region operates with the clarity, capability and strategic coherence needed to meet its goals. We are looking for someone who understands that good policy, well-managed operations and strong governance are not ends in themselves - they exist to drive better outcomes for GMB members.

But, the role is also forward-facing. You will be expected to think strategically about where the Region needs to develop, whether that is in how it trains its activists, how it uses data and technology, how it embeds equality into its structures, or how it positions itself on the policy issues that matter most to London's working people. You will bring analysis, ideas and leadership to those questions, not just execution.

The breadth of this role is intentional. London Region needs a senior leader who can hold multiple strategic threads simultaneously: connecting policy with operations, governance with people development, communications with intelligence.

JOIN US

GMB London Region is a place where committed people do meaningful work. Our members are London's Uber drivers, hospital workers, local government staff, school support workers, energy workers and countless others — the people who keep this region running. Fighting for them, growing our union and making GMB stronger in London is what drives everything we do.

This is a rare opportunity to join the Regional leadership team in a role that will genuinely shape how London Region develops over the coming years. If you have the skills, the values and the ambition to take it on, we want to hear from you.

If you think you may be who we’re looking for and if you feel you meet the criteria outlined in the person specification of the job description, we’d like to hear from you.
