GMB Union has said Ember's annual European Electricity Review, which found that in 2025 wind and solar generated more EU electricity than fossil fuels for the first time in history, shows we still need gas as a reliable back up.
Andy Prendergast, GMB National Secretary, said:
“The growth in renewables is really impressive, but we have to recognise the variable nature of the power they generate and the need for a reliable back up.
“With significant battery storage or large-scale hydrogen production still a long way off, it underlines the vital need for gas and nuclear to ensure we can keep the lights on whatever the weather.'”
