GMB Trade Union - Widnes energy firm announces Christmas redundancies

A Widnes firm which produces renewable energy has announced job cuts after Christmas.

Almost 50 workers at risk of redundancy at SecAmin, in Desoto Road.

The site processes animal by-products and produces renewable energy, and employs a variety of workers, such as production operatives, engineers and forklift drivers.

GMB Union will now meet with company bosses to discuss ways to minimise compulsory redundancies and ways to support and retrain workers who do lose their jobs.

Tim Collins, GMB Regional Organiser, said:

“These are skilled jobs - and workers at the site have worked there their whole lives as did their parents and grandparents before them.

“It’s utterly wrong the company has made this decision with such short notice, right before the festive period.

“It’s the worst possible Christmas present for these workers and SecAmin should be supporting them during this awful time.”

Derek Twigg, MP for Widnes and Halewood, said:

“I am deeply concerned by the news that redundancies are planned at the site in Widnes, and I realise that this will be absolutely devastating for those affected, coming as it does in the run-up to Christmas.

“I urge SecAnim to do everything possible to support their employees and to consider every feasible measure to safeguard jobs at the site.”
