GMB Trade Union - Bank of England calls for pay restraint ‘sick joke’

Telling the hard-working people who carried this country through the pandemic they don’t deserve a pay rise is outrageous.

GMB Union has branded calls by the Governor of the Bank of England for pay restraint as a 'sick joke'.

Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary, said:

“The nerve of Mr Bailey is scarcely credible.

“Telling the hard-working people who carried this country through the pandemic they don’t deserve a pay rise is outrageous.

“Carers, NHS workers, refuse collectors, shop workers and more; according to Mr Bailey these people should just swallow a massive real terms pay cut, at the same time as many are having to choose between heating and eating.

“Isn’t the fact they kept working while many of us stayed safe at home enough for him?

“It’s a sick joke.”
