GMB Trade Union - Care worker numbers plummeting needs 'urgent response'

Low pay and working conditions were always unsustainable, now we’re seeing the consequences

GMB, the union for care workers, has responded to today’s figures showing the number of care workers dropped by 50,000 in a year

Rachel Harrison, GMB National Officer, said:

“GMB has warned for years that low pay and working conditions in care were unsustainable, and now we are seeing the consequences.

“It’s little surprise that exhausted care workers are looking elsewhere when they are expected to survive on a whisker above the minimum wage.

“The fall in the number of care workers in England requires an emergency response that tackles pay, safe staffing levels and progression for our skilled and dedicated care workers.

"GMB is campaigning for care workers to be paid no less than £15 an hour – it’s the least they deserve.”
