GMB Union supports a call by London Assembly Member Elly Baker for a cap on the number of private hire vehicles in London.
The City Hall Transport Chair wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport calling for vehicle numbers to be limited.
Heidi Alexander replied saying there were 'no current plans' for a cap.
Eamon O'Hearn, GMB National Officer, said:
"GMB's annual congress this year called for private hire vehicle numbers to be capped in order to deliver sustainable transport networks.
"Without adequate protections, private hire drivers will be left as the Cinderella’s of the transport industry.
"The Government's attempts to implement cross-border controls - as recommended by the Casey report - will require transport authorities to implement caps too."
