GMB Trade Union - Government fails on Gender Recognition Act

The Government’s failure to meaningfully reform the gender recognition act is a missed opportunity, says GMB Union.

Ministers announced [1] there will be no major overhaul to the legislation to allow trans people to determine their own gender.

Although GMB welcomes the decision to take the gender recognition certificate process online and to reduce the costs involved, GMB consider this a missed opportunity to improve the lives of trans workers.

Nell Andrew, GMB National Equality and Inclusion Officer, said:

‘The Government’s plans to ignore public consultation [2] and double down on the bureaucratic Gender Recognition Act, marks a policy based on fear rather than fact.

"Thousands took part in the public consultation, including trans people with lived experience of the intrusive, degrading process needed to change your legal gender.

“Moves to push this discriminatory agenda during lockdown demonstrates total lack of concern about trans and non-binary people’s wellbeing and safety.

“This charge towards ignoring expert evidence, smacks of Trumpism, where facts and human rights are dismissed in favour of bigotry and fear - all led by a Tory government hell bent on stripping the country of our hard-won human rights and taking us back decades in terms of equality.”
