GMB Trade Union - More support for families following Avonmouth tragedy

GMB Union annual congress this week pledged more support for members’ families following fatal workplace accidents in the wake of the Avonmouth tragedy.

An explosion at the Wessex Water plant in Avonmouth back in 2020, saw four workers killed including GMB member Brian Vickery.

Brian was survived by his Widow and three sons.

The union hosted a minute silence in their memory shortly after.

In a motion at GMB’s national conference in Brighton today, the union has pledged for more support for Members families after fatal accidents until all legalities are improved.

Chris Marsh, GMB Workplace organiser said:

“Brian was a rock for his family, and a much-missed colleague and we feel this result is a perfect tribute to his memory.

“Our members and reps stood by Brian’s family locally, with many of us still grieving ourselves, and its great now that we have a more formal process to help support the families.

“There are at least 123 workplace deaths every year in the workplace, a silent epidemic and it's important that we tackle the causes.”
