GMB, the energy union, has responded to a winter blackout warning from the National Grid.

Gary Carter, GMB National Officer, said:

“In the wake of these dire blackout warnings, the Government must build new nuclear, upscale its hydrogen ambitions and invest in infrastructure to ensure the lights stay on and we get to net zero.

“The UK needs a balanced energy policy to get to net zero and meet increasing electricity demand.

“We will require more renewables, new nuclear, investment in hydrogen and low carbon gas technologies to power homes and industry.

The UK needs a balanced energy policy to get to net zero and meet increasing electricity demand. This report shows how close to the cliff edge we are.

Gary Carter, GMB National Officer

“In the energy sector there is a massive opportunity for the UK to create thousands of well-paid green jobs and lead on net zero carbon technologies - but we need to do it now before the lights go out.

“This report shows how close to the cliff edge we are, action and investment now is what we need.
