GMB Trade Union - Newcastle energy company announces srike dates

These pay negotiations have been nothing but a pantomime

Workers at a Newcastle energy company have announced when they will strike over a real terms pay cut.

More than 200 workers at Baker Hughes, in Walker, will take eight days of industrial action from 12 – 15 December and 12 – 18 January.

GMB members at the company – who makes undersea pipelines and cable conduits for the oil and gas industry – have overwhelmingly turned down pay offers of as little as four per cent.

With inflation at 12.3 per cent, both offers amount to massive real terms pay cut.

Michael Hunt, GMB Organiser, said:

"These pay negotiations have been nothing but a pantomime.

“Baker Hughes has orders for many years to come. Yet instead of helping the workers who’ll have to complete those orders, they’re being miserly, like modern day Scrooges.

“If they don’t want production to b affected by these strikes, they need to do the right thing and make a decent offer to help workers though the cost of living crisis.”
