GMB Trade Union - Relaxing immigration rules won't stop HGV driver crisis

Bosses need to sort out poor pay and conditions - anything less is like trying to put out a forest fire with a water pistol

GMB, the drivers’ union, said relaxing immigration rules for HGV drivers is a ‘quick fix’ that won’t solve the supply chain crisis.

James Wroath, the chief executive of Wincanton, has suggested a temporary change of rules about hiring European drivers to help the industry deal with the current shortage. [1]

Andy Prendergast, GMB National Secretary, said:

“Relaxing immigration rules for HGV drivers is a quick fix: it won’t work in the long term.

“Bosses must deal with the underlying issues -  the poor pay and conditions many drivers experience on a daily basis .

“Anything less is like trying to put out a forest fire with a water pistol.”
