British Gas - Centrica Home - Reduction of Roles Update - GMB Meeting - 24 June 2026
Posted on:
Dear Colleagues,
This bulletin isn't relevant to all British Gas GMB members but it is important to keep you up to date with what is going on within the business.
**This bulletin is intended for colleagues within Centrica Home who have been informed that they are at risk as part of the new restructure. If you have not received this briefing or any related correspondence, please be reassured that you are not impacted. You are receiving this bulletin as a valued GMB member, and we remain committed to supporting you and keeping all members updated throughout this difficult time.
GMB attended the first collective consultation meeting on Friday 19 June 2026 in Windsor, where we met senior business leaders face-to-face to challenge the company’s proposals and demand answers on behalf of our members.
The company is proposing a reduction of 611 roles, including 542 Level 8 colleagues and 57 Level 7 colleagues, all of which are subject to collective consultation. Since the announcement, GMB has received an overwhelming amount of feedback from members, and one message has come through loud and clear the way this process has been handled has caused significant concern, confusion and distress.

Members Deserve Better Information
We challenged the company directly on the excessive use of corporate jargon and the lack of clear, straightforward information being provided to colleagues. For many members, this is the first time they have ever faced a redundancy process. They need time, support, and clear explanations not rushed communications and complex business packs. We made it clear that members require sufficient time to understand the information presented, discuss it with their families and seek advice from their trade union.
Time to Speak to Your Union
The company is actively directing impacted colleagues to contact GMB for advice and support. However, we have raised serious concerns that some members are not being given reasonable time during working hours to do so. We have received reports from members who have been refused time to contact their union due to “customer demand”. This is unacceptable and directly contradicts the company’s message that customer demand has reduced and is one of the drivers behind these proposed job cuts. We have demanded clarity on what constitutes reasonable time for members to consult with their trade union and are awaiting a formal response. If you are prevented from speaking to your union representative, please contact GMB immediately.
30 Minutes Is Not Enough
The company stated that it believes 30 minutes is sufficient time for colleagues to review the consultation meeting notes and supporting documentation. GMB strongly disagrees. The information provided is extensive, complex, and potentially life-changing for those affected. Members should not be expected to absorb this information under pressure or within unrealistic timescales. If you require additional time to review the documents or participate fully in consultation, raise this with your manager. If this request is refused, contact your union representative immediately.
Challenging the Business Case
The company’s rationale for these reductions centres on falling customer demand, increased self-service and technological changes that have reduced hand-offs in the customer journey. However, members have raised legitimate questions. Over 200 colleagues were recently moved from Service to Energy. Members are asking why these moves took place if the company now believes there is insufficient work. The company has stated that, at the time of those moves, it had not yet decided to undertake this redundancy exercise. We will continue to challenge the rationale behind these decisions.
Voluntary Exits Must Be Maximised
Members have made it clear that every effort must be made to avoid compulsory redundancies. GMB has demanded that colleagues who genuinely wish to leave the business through Expressions of Interest (EOIs) should be allowed to do so wherever possible to reduce the need for compulsory job losses. The company has confirmed it will seek to honour as many EOIs as business requirements allow.
Jobs Still Being Advertised
Many members who wish to remain with Centrica are questioning how genuine and fair this process is, particularly when vacancies continue to be advertised across the organisation. We are aware that recruitment activity is ongoing within British Gas Business and other areas of the group. GMB has formally challenged this and called on the company to pause external recruitment and prioritise redeployment opportunities for colleagues whose roles are at risk. It has been confirmed that any colleagues interested in CRA roles within British Gas Business should raise their interest with their team leader. We would also encourage members to regularly check the job board for other available roles that may support them in continuing their career with British Gas.
GMB Mitigation and Member Questions
GMB has submitted a comprehensive mitigation proposal aimed at reducing compulsory redundancies as far as possible. In addition, we have submitted more than 100 questions raised directly by members. We expect full answers from the company and will communicate these responses as soon as they are received.
Protecting Vulnerable Groups
We have also raised concerns regarding colleagues who are currently on maternity leave, shared parental leave, adoption leave, or are due to commence such leave. These members have additional legal protections, and GMB has made it clear that the company must ensure they are treated fairly, consistently, and lawfully throughout this process.
We Hear You
Many members have told us they want to fight for their jobs. We hear your anger. We hear your frustration. We hear your concerns about job security, fairness and the future. GMB will continue to challenge the company at every stage of this consultation. We will scrutinise the business case, challenge unfair practices, push for redeployment opportunities and fight to reduce compulsory redundancies wherever possible.
If you have questions, concerns, or mitigation proposals that you would like GMB to raise on your behalf, please contact your local GMB representative. In addition, GMB will be holding a drop-in session where colleagues can ask questions, discuss concerns and receive updates regarding the consultation. This will be a safe, supportive, and confidential space where you can seek clarification, share your views or simply talk through how these proposals are affecting you.
