The Wales and South West Regional Equality Forum supports the statement issued by the Race Network regarding Professor Jason Arday. We share the sentiments expressed in that statement and stand in solidarity with all those mourning his loss.
We are deeply saddened by the death of Professor Arday, an inspirational scholar, campaigner and advocate whose work challenged inequality and helped shape vital conversations on race, education and social justice. His contributions leave a lasting legacy and serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of continuing the fight for equality and justice.
Professor Arday's work highlighted the profound impact that racism, discrimination, bullying and exclusion can have on individuals and communities. Too often, those who speak out about their experiences are not fully heard, are met with inadequate support, or see little meaningful action taken. This can deepen harm and undermine confidence in the institutions that should provide protection, accountability and change.
His legacy reinforces why initiatives such as the Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan are so important. Achieving genuine change requires more than statements of intent. It demands that lived experiences are listened to, that organisations are held accountable, and that action is taken to challenge racism and discrimination wherever they occur.
As a trade union, GMB is committed to bringing about change not only in the workplace but across society. We will continue to challenge all forms of discrimination and inequality and work to create environments where everyone is treated with dignity, respect and fairness.
Never again should circumstances such as these be allowed to happen. The media, employers, institutions and all of us have a responsibility to do more.
The best way to honour Professor Arday's legacy is to continue the fight against racism, bullying and discrimination in all their forms, ensuring that concerns are heard, acted upon and never dismissed.
Our heartfelt condolences go to Professor Arday's family, friends, colleagues and loved ones, and to all those whose lives he touched, inspired and changed.
