GMB Trade Union - 'Callous' council presses on with care home closures amid crisis

GMB, the union for care workers, has branded Derbyshire County Council ‘callous’ for pushing on with care home closures in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

In an email to GMB today the local authority confirmed it was going ahead with the closures.

DCC said it was “reviewing how best to engage people during the consultation in the light of the changing circumstances.”

Jon Smith, GMB Organiser, said:

“We have been trying for some time to get an answer from the council. We asked them to at least postpone the consultation on the planned closures.

“It is ludicrous we now find out they plan to not only go ahead with the consultation but potentially put back office staff at further risk.

“At a time of a mass pandemic only Derbyshire County Council could think it’s a good idea to close down elderly care home beds.”
