GMB Trade Union - National Grid report exposes folly of ignoring gas

All realistic plans for net zero will require use of gas for the foreseeable future

GMB, the energy union, says today’s energy report exposes the follow of politicians buying their heads in the sand over gas.

The National Grid has warned British households could face three hour blackouts this winter due gas shortages. [1]

GMB has warned for years the UK’s approach to energy policy will leave the country desperately exposed.

Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary, said:

“Today’s report exposes the utter folly of politicians consistently burying their heads in the sand over gas.

“All realistic plans for net zero will require use of gas - and the tens of thousands of good, well paid, unionised jobs that come with it – for the foreseeable future.

“But a borderline negligent approach to the UK’s energy security has seen us dismantle our gas storage capacity – despite repeated warnings from GMB – leaving us desperately short this winter and forced to go cap in hand to other countries.

“Now the chickens are coming home to roost – and as ever it’s working people who’ll pay the price."
