GMB Trade Union - Wider schools reopening needs science-based approach

GMB members in schools are genuinely frightened for themselves, their loved ones, pupils and colleagues

GMB, the union for school staff, has led a joint union call on for a science-based approach to the wider reopening of schools.

A coalition comprising of all the major education unions has written to the Secretary of State for Education outlining key tests that must be met before schools are reopening to more pupils.

Protecting lives of pupils, communities and staff must be top priority, the letter tells the education secretary.

Karen Leonard, GMB National Officer, said:

“GMB members in schools are genuinely frightened for themselves, their loved ones, pupils and colleagues.

“The Government must give them the confidence that they can safely continue doing the job they love educating pupils in schools.

“Our message is this: Mr Johnson your home work is set. You say you will follow the science, well give us the evidence and we will mark your efforts based on the science as to whether wider opening of schools will be safe.

”GMB, alongside education unions, has set out key tests and we intend to hold government to it.

“Every classroom, every dept, every member of school staff, pupils and their families need assurance that the Government is putting their safety first. “
