Privatisation of water has failed and we should take back the tap
GMB, the water union, has responded to a Government U-turn on the dumping of raw sewage
Gary Carter, GMB National Officer, said:
"GMB supports calls to strengthen legislation and impose duties on water companies to clear up their acts.
"For too long water companies have been able to dump raw sewage in seas and rivers.
"The fines imposed on water companies show legislation is to control this.
"Ministers and regulators must do more to make water companies invest and dramatically improve infrastructure.
"People deserve clean safe water and have been let down by water companies which are more interested in shareholder returns than the environment.
"With COP26 happening next week, it's time to take action to tackle the effects of climate change and improve our seas, rivers and drinking water.
"Privatisation of water has failed and we should take back the tap."
