NHS staff car parking charges – which cost health workers £79 million a year – must be scrapped, GMB Congress heard.
Delegates voted to pass a motion calling for parking spaces to be free at all NHS premises during the union’s annual conference in Blackpool today [Tuesday].
GMB has long campaigned for NHS Staff parking charges to be scrapped.
Nahira Khan, Union Delegate, told GMB congress:
“Across the NHS, staff are being treated differently depending on where they work.
“Some workers are paying hundreds of pounds a year just to park at the hospital they help keep running.
“Others are stuck on waiting lists for permits.
“Some are forced to park streets away, walking in before dawn, or walking back alone late at night after exhausting shifts.
“NHS staff should not have to pay simply to turn up for work.
“Cleaners, porters, healthcare assistants, nurses, admin workers, catering staff, security staff, ambulance staff.
Every one of them plays a part in keeping the NHS moving.
“Yet too many are being charged before their shift has even started.”
