GMB Trade Union - Thames Water must be legally responible for massive sewage dump

GMB Union’s thousands of water worker members will be rightfully horrified

Water companies must be made legally responsible for dumped sewage says GMB after figures showed Thames Water dumped raw sewage into rivers 5,028 times in 2021

The company dumped untreated effluent for more than 68,000 hours into the river systems around Oxford last year, campaigners have revealed. [1]

Andy Prendergast, GMB National Secretary, said:

“GMB’s thousands of water worker members will be rightfully horrified by this environmental outrage – and so will Thames Water customers.

“The massive sums paid out to water bosses and shareholders must instead be invested our rivers and waterways and improving services for consumers, including a pay rise for the water workers who are leaving the industry in droves.

“It's high time Ministers stepped in and made water companies legally responsible for the untreated sewage they dump in our waterways. “
