The UK’s armed forced capacity is a ‘hollow shell’ and we need more investment in this ‘dangerous’ world, a defence worker has told TUC congress.
Ian Clarke, who has worked building submarine parts at Rolls Royce in Derby for 25 years, told the event in Brighton he wanted ‘a country workers can be proud of and be protected in’.
He added that 36 pence in every pound spent on defence returns in tax revenue - helping fund public services.
Ian Clarke, Rolls Royce Worker, told TUC congress:
“Nobody wants wars.
“But the world has become more dangerous.
“There’s not enough people to run our Navy ships and our armed forces’ capacity is a hollow shell.
“Defence provides skilled work, decent wages and sustains working-class communities like Plymouth, Barrow, Clydeside and Belfast.
“But it needs increased investment for the future.
“Defence is not just bombs and bullets. It also protects us from cyber and terrorism attacks.
“And ensures our armed forces have the kit they need to do the job. “
