Aviation

Welcome to the GMB Union Aviation Sector.

We represent thousands of members across this vital industry. Aviation is key for economic growth and jobs, global connectivity, holidays and trade. Our Aviation workers keep the country moving but often face challenges with pay and working conditions. An Aviation worker is anyone who is involved in flying and maintaining aircraft, running airports, managing airspace, handling passengers, cargo, or supporting the infrastructure and systems that keep aviation moving.

We are a campaigning union. Through our Airport Workers Against Abuse Campaign, we are leading the fightback against the growing trend of abuse of aviation workers, particularly our frontline airport workers. Our research has found that 72% of airport workers have felt unsafe going into work due to abuse or aggression, and 61% have considered leaving the industry because of abuse. We invite you to find out more and get involved with the campaign through the link below.

We support strategic airport expansion and infrastructure development including the third runway for London Heathrow, the second runway for London Gatwick, investment in our regional airports, and developments to improve accessibility and facilities at all airports.

Expansion in the sector must bring benefits to all workers. We fight for a good fair wage for all aviation workers, whether directly or indirectly employed. We demand targeted support from government for the sector, including fully funded contingency support for emergencies and pandemics. We call for robust safety standards, and the highest levels of training, safety and security.

We support worker-centred, credible and sensible planned decarbonisation of the sector, particularly through cutting emissions and the development of sustainable aviation fuel. However, we will never accept working-class people being chastised or detrimentally affected in any way for going on holiday whilst the wealthy fly around in private jets.

We bring worker-voice to the table as we navigate the big issues of our time including automation and emerging technologies in the sector. If you are an aviation worker and not in a union, you should be. Join our movement today for strong bargaining power, a collective voice, and campaigning that delivers. Your voice matters.
