An investigation by GMB has revealed NHS trusts pay at least £1.8 billion a year.
The union sent Freedom of Information requests to more than 200 trusts, with responses showing they spent £1,831,105,580 per year on outsourced contracts.
Just under half the trusts asked didn’t respond – meaning the true figure could be far higher.
Ferzana Jumma, GMB Regional President, told Labour conference:
“Outsourcing and two-tier systems are no way to run public services.
“It hurts morale, creates division and tells hard-working people that they do not matter.
“From tomorrow, GMB members at Airedale Hospital will be back on strike until they win the equal treatment they are entitled to.
“I want to say thanks to the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting for listening to our members and announcing he will limit NHS outsourcing in future.
"Let’s finish the job and bring about the biggest wave of insourcing in a generation that our government has promised. “
