North Somerset faces bin chaos after more than 100 GMB members at North Somerset Environment Company (NSEC) voted for strike action.
A majority of 95 per cent voted to walk out over a deal which would leave them paid up to £4 per hour less than other refuse collectors in the region.
GMB will now meet with reps to decide on strike dates.
Lorraine Gaskell, GMB Regional Organiser, said:
“These workers are out on our streets in the rain, the cold and the heat, collecting the bins and keeping our communities clean and safe.
"They’re not asking for the earth — they’re asking to be paid fairly for the work they do and in line with what others in the neighbouring councils already earn for the same job.
"Instead, they’ve been handed another rubbish rise that leaves them at the back of the queue.
The ballot results send a clear message, these members are not prepared to take it any more.
"But they last thing they want to do is go on strike and GMB remains open to further talks aimed at securing a meaningful increase to the offer."
